Lofty Aspiration(s), Loftier Penalties

Welcome back to the Spotlight! In the sports and entertainment industry, as in life, an aspiration is a prerequisite to a successful career. An aspiration is what drives them to dedicate themselves to their craft on their journey forward to reach their goals. For many, the aspiration is not only to reach the top of their field and create their own legacy, but also to land lucrative endorsement deals along the way. Team owners have their own aspirations of their team winning a championship. Unfortunately, in some cases, well-intentioned aspirations sometimes push people to act unethically and try to bend the rules along the way.

Such was the case in the recent saga of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers and their All-Star Forward Kawhi Leonard. Indeed, a recent investigation (spurred by reporting of sports journalist Pablo Torre) found that in an effort to skirt the NBA’s salary cap rules so as to sign Leonard – a top talent in the league – while still having enough cap space to sign an impressive supporting cast, the Clippers’ front office arranged for Leonard to sign sham, multimillion dollar endorsement deals with a number of companies including a company called…”Aspiration.” The NBA’s harsh punishment for the Aspiration scheme must have been met with exasperation, as owner Steve Ballmer was fined $30 million and he and several other members of the Clippers organization were suspended and the Clippers forfeited five future first round draft picks. For his part, Leonard was only fined $700,000 – a drop in the pan compared to the overall value of his deal—both above the table and below. Suffice it to say, the NBA made an example out of the actors involved, as their aspirations landed them in hot water.
