Joint Minority
Mentorship Program
Mentorship that builds a more inclusive legal future
Foster Garvey’s Opportunity & Progress Council proudly sponsors the Joint Minority Mentorship Program (JMMP). JMMP is a collaboration among several Washington-based minority bar associations, along with the Washington State Bar Association and the King County Bar Association. The program pairs law students and new lawyers who self-identify as members of historically marginalized or underrepresented groups with experienced mentors. JMMP mentors comprise attorneys and judges from all walks of life, including allies, who support mentees as they prepare to enter and navigate their legal careers.
Each year, participants are selected and formally matched. At the annual kickoff event, mentor-mentee pairs meet to create their own agreement regarding discussion topics, meetings and follow-up activities. While the timeframe for the formal JMMP mentor-mentee pairing is one year, the relationships often carry on well beyond the program.
Stone Scholars Class
Beginning in 2024, all JMMP law student and new lawyer mentees who complete the one-year mentorship program will be recognized as “Stone Scholars” in honor of long-time Foster Garvey attorney Rafael Stone, who has devoted his 50-plus year career to impacting the profession of law and the community at large, including serving as a mentor and guide for diverse attorneys.
