Ralph will present on emerging federal and state regulatory approaches to ultra-processed foods (UPFs) at the New Jersey Food Processors Association (NJFPA) Conference next month.
Public concern over UPFs has prompted a wave of state activity, but without a consistent definition, regulations vary widely. Many states are focusing on the “Standard 11” additives, including potassium bromate, brominated vegetable oil, propylparaben, titanium dioxide and several synthetic dyes. Six states have already enacted restrictions and many others are considering similar legislation.
At the federal level, the FDA and USDA have issued a Request for Information as they explore creating a uniform definition of UPFs. This effort aligns with Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kennedy’s Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) initiative and indicates continued federal attention to how UPFs are defined and regulated.
