Compensation

Our success as a law firm is a direct result of the people who work here. We not only recognize the talents of our employees, but we also respect their lives outside the firm and are committed to exploring ways to help them meet both their professional and personal goals.

Working with our associates - those attorneys who are not yet members — the firm devised a new compensation policy consistent with Foster Pepper's commitment to maintaining the best people with rounded lives, and a high-quality practice.

Many large firms require associates to bill 1,900 hours or more. The new salary standard at Foster Pepper is based on a billable hour expectation of 1,800 hours, a respectable level of work that allows time to attend a child's soccer game, care for a spouse or parent, volunteer at a local school, or otherwise serve in the community and still develop a robust practice. For each billable hour in excess of 1,850, the associate shares in the additional revenue. The beauty of this new plan is that young lawyers may work more hours at their option. It's a matter of choice. If they do, they are financially rewarded.

Foster Pepper chose this new approach because we believe the practice of law should not be defined by how much money we make. Our firm's tradition is rooted in a devotion to providing high quality legal service in an efficient and ethical way. We want to be the best lawyers at what we do, and we want to attract lawyers who share our commitment to pursuing a high quality, intellectually satisfying legal practice.

The new compensation plan also fits well with our firm's "Commitment to Core Values" and our tradition of giving back to the community through our charitable giving and Pro Bono programs.
